Dear Most Holy Trinity Family,

This weekend we will gather to celebrate the Solemnity of Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. As we celebrate this Solemnity, think about the places where we find Jesus as King. We definitely do not find him enthroned in a palace, far away and removed from creation. It is just the opposite: we find Him incarnate in the suffering of our brothers and sisters. We find Him on the cross with those who are carrying heavy burdens. In a recent conference, all the Catholic Bishops of the United States had an almost unanimous message of solidarity with our immigrant brothers and sisters who are experiencing persecution and discrimination. The Bishops recognized the work of the clergy, of religious brothers and sisters, and of lay faithful accompanying and assisting immigrants facing persecution. The Bishops reminded us that when one member of the Body of Christ suffers, all suffer.

As an immigrant, I am grateful for this country and for the contributions of millions of people from different nations. Immigrants have contributed so much to the life of the Church in the United States, and our own Most Holy Trinity Parish is a reflection of that.
Many people will gather to celebrate a lovely National Day of Thanksgiving. I am grateful to you for welcoming me into your parish community. I am sure that many of you will have friends, family, and neighbors at your dinner table in a spirit of gratitude. I also know that many will not be able to gather because they find themselves in detention centers, or in other painful situations. So, as we gather around the table, pray for them, and if you can do something for them, do not hesitate to do it.

Gia đình Giáo xứ Chúa Ba Ngôi Quý Mến,

Cuối tuần này, chúng ta sẽ tụ họp để mừng Lễ Chúa Giêsu Kitô, Vua Vũ Trụ. Khi cử hành Lễ trọng này, chúng ta hãy cùng suy nghĩ về những nơi chúng ta tìm thấy Vua Giêsu. Chắc chắn chúng ta không tìm thấy Ngài ngồi trên ngai vàng trong cung điện, xa cách và tách rời khỏi những tạo vật của Chúa. Ngược lại, chúng ta thấy Ngài trong nỗi đau khổ của anh chị em chúng ta. Chúng ta thấy Ngài trên thập giá cùng những ai đang mang gánh nặng nề.
Trong một hội nghị gần đây, tất cả các Giám mục Công giáo Hoa Kỳ đã gửi một thông điệp gần như đồng thuận về sự hiệp thông với những anh chị em di dân đang chịu bách hại và phân biệt đối xử. Các Giám mục đã nhận thấy hàng giáo sĩ, tu sĩ nam nữ, và các giáo dân đồng hành và giúp đỡ những anh chị em di dân gặp khó khăn. Các Giám mục nhắc nhở chúng ta rằng khi một thành viên của Thân Thể Chúa Kitô đau khổ, tất cả đều đau khổ.
Là một người di dân, tôi biết ơn đất nước này và những đóng góp của hàng triệu con người đến từ nhiều quốc gia khác nhau. Người di dân đã đóng góp rất nhiều vào đời sống Giáo hội tại Hoa Kỳ, và Giáo xứ Chúa Ba Ngôi của chúng ta phản ánh điều đó.

Nhiều người sẽ tụ họp để mừng Lễ Tạ Ơn. Tôi biết ơn quý ông bà anh chị em đã chào đón tôi vào cộng đoàn giáo xứ. Tôi chắc chắn rằng nhiều người trong qúy ông bà anh chị em sẽ có bạn bè, gia đình, và hàng xóm quây quần trong bữa tối với tinh thần biết ơn. Tôi cũng biết nhiều người sẽ không thể tụ họp vì họ đang ở các trung tâm giam giữ, hoặc trong những hoàn cảnh khó khăn khác. Vì vậy, khi chúng ta quây quần trong ngày Lễ Tạ Ơn, hãy cầu nguyện cho họ, và nếu có thể làm điều gì đó cho họ, đừng ngần ngại thực hiện điều đó.

Dear Most Holy Trinity Family,

“But for you who fear my name, there will arise the sun of justice with healing rays.” (Malachi 3:20)

This weekend, our parish community will be celebrating the Feast of the Vietnamese Martyrs. During the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Christians in Vietnam faced several waves of persecution. These waves of violence were sponsored by Vietnamese emperors who, out of fear of foreign religious influences, adopted anti-Christian policies. The Feast of the Vietnamese Martyrs honors the men and women who were martyred for their Catholic faith.

The Feast of the Vietnamese Martyrs holds deep significance for the Vietnamese community. Remembering and celebrating the lives of the Martyrs is the sacred work of the Church. So, please join our Vietnamese brothers and sisters in prayer as we remember those whose shed blood became the seed of faith in Asia.

In many countries, people converted to Catholicism because it was the mandate of a king, queen, or emperor. But this was not the case for Vietnam. The people of Vietnam embraced the Catholic faith after witnessing the courage and steadfast faith of the Martyrs. In other words, it was their choice. For the Vietnamese Martyrs, and for our Vietnamese brothers and sisters who suffered persecution or death due to anti-Christian policies, the sun of justice with healing rays has shone.

Let us be united in celebrating the Vietnamese Martyrs, for the vision of all the Church’s Martyrs transcends every cultural barrier.

Gia đình Giáo xứ Chúa Ba Ngôi Quý Mến,

Nhưng đối với các ngươi là những người kính sợ danh Ta, Mặt Trời Công Chính sẽ mọc lên, mang theo ánh sáng chữa lành.

Cuối tuần này, cộng đoàn giáo xứ chúng ta sẽ mừng Lễ Các Thánh Tử Đạo Việt Nam. Vào cuối thế kỷ 18 và đầu thế kỷ 19, các Kitô hữu tại Việt Nam đã trải qua nhiều đợt bách hại khốc liệt. Những làn sóng bạo lực này do các vua chúa Việt Nam phát động, vì sợ ảnh hưởng của tôn giáo ngoại quốc nên đã ban hành những chính sách chống Kitô giáo. Lễ Các Thánh Tử Đạo Việt Nam là dịp để tôn vinh những người nam nữ đã hy sinh mạng sống mình vì đức tin Công Giáo.

Lễ này mang ý nghĩa sâu sắc đối với cộng đoàn người Việt. Việc tưởng nhớ và tôn vinh cuộc đời của các Thánh Tử Đạo là công việc thánh thiêng của Giáo Hội. Xin anh chị em cùng hiệp thông cầu nguyện với các anh chị em Việt Nam của chúng ta, khi chúng ta tưởng nhớ những người đã đổ máu mình để hạt giống đức tin được nảy nở tại châu Á.

Ở nhiều quốc gia khác, người ta theo đạo Công Giáo vì đó là lệnh truyền của vua, nữ hoàng, hoặc hoàng đế. Nhưng tại Việt Nam thì không như vậy. Dân tộc Việt Nam đã đón nhận đức tin Công Giáo sau khi chứng kiến lòng can đảm và đức tin kiên vững của các vị Tử Đạo. Nói cách khác, đó là sự chọn lựa của chính họ. Đối với các Thánh Tử Đạo Việt Nam và những anh chị em Việt Nam của chúng ta đã chịu bách hại hay mất mạng vì các chính sách chống Kitô giáo, thì Mặt Trời Công Chính với những tia sáng chữa lành đã chiếu rọi trên họ.

Chúng ta hãy cùng hiệp nhất trong việc mừng kính các Thánh Tử Đạo Việt Nam, vì tầm nhìn của mọi vị Tử Đạo trong Giáo Hội vượt lên trên mọi ranh giới văn hóa.

Dear Most Holy Trinity Family:

This weekend the Church celebrates the Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica. This is the Cathedral of Rome, and it is the official ecclesial seat of the Pope Leo XIV. Those of you who have been to Rome have probably visited this historical site.

The readings for the weekend make reference to a temple building. We can relate to the readings because church buildings are sacred spaces for worship. Nevertheless, in the Gospel, Jesus shocked his audience when he talks about destroying the Temple and in three days building it up again. When people heard this, they were not only shocked, but offended because the Temple was a sacred place. But, Jesus was referring to his own body as the Temple. While we now know that he was referring to his death and resurrection, his audience at that time did not know that. They only came to understand the meaning of Jesus’ words after his resurrection. While Church buildings are sacred places of worship, the true dwelling presence of God is in Jesus Christ, and thus in the Eucharist. For us Catholics, Christ takes the place of Temple. This statement of faith can be also shocking because people do not fully grasp how Jesus is fully present in the Eucharist. Furthermore, as unworthy as we are, our bodies are also earthen vessels for God’s dwelling.

Speaking of the temple, this weekend members of the Finance Council will provide us with a financial report. It will take place during the Mass, after communion, and before the final blessing. It is important for the parish to show its income and expenses so that you can see how church donations are being used.

Lễ Cung Hiến Vương Cung Thánh Đường La tê ra nô

Gia Đình Giáo Xứ Chúa Ba Ngôi Quý Mến,

Cuối tuần này, Giáo Hội cử hành Lễ Cung Hiến Vương Cung Thánh Đường La tê ra nô. Đây là Nhà Thờ Chính Toà của thành Rôma và là ngai tòa của Đức Giáo Hoàng Leo XIV. Những ai đã từng đến Rôma chắc hẳn đã ghé thăm địa điểm lịch sử này.

Các bài đọc cuối tuần này nói về Đền Thờ – nơi thánh thiêng dành cho việc thờ phượng. Tuy nhiên, trong Tin Mừng, Chúa Giêsu đã khiến dân chúng ngạc nhiên khi Người nói về việc phá huỷ Đền Thờ và xây dựng lại trong ba ngày. Khi nghe điều đó, họ không chỉ ngạc nhiên mà còn cảm thấy bị xúc phạm, vì Đền Thờ là nơi thánh thiêng nhất.

Nhưng Chúa Giêsu muốn nói đến Đền Thờ là chính thân thể Người. Giờ đây chúng ta biết rằng Người đang nói về cái chết và sự phục sinh của Người, nhưng thính giả khi ấy chưa hiểu điều đó. Chỉ sau khi Chúa phục sinh, họ mới hiểu được ý nghĩa lời Người nói.

Mặc dù các nhà thờ là nơi thánh thiêng để thờ phượng, nhưng sự hiện diện thật của Thiên Chúa ở trong Đức Giêsu Kitô, và vì thế ở trong Bí tích Thánh Thể. Đối với chúng ta là người Công Giáo, Đức Kitô chính là Đền Thờ. Lời tuyên xưng đức tin này cũng có thể làm nhiều người kinh ngạc, vì không phải ai cũng hiểu trọn vẹn việc Chúa Giêsu hiện diện thật trong Bí tích Thánh Thể. Hơn nữa, dù chúng ta bất xứng, thân xác chúng ta cũng là những bình gốm chứa đựng sự hiện diện của Thiên Chúa.

Nói đến Đền Thờ, cuối tuần này, sau phần Rước Lễ và trước phép lành cuối lễ, các thành viên của Hội Đồng Tài Chính sẽ trình bày bản báo cáo tài chính. Điều này rất quan trọng để giáo xứ có thể minh bạch về thu chi, giúp quý ông bà anh chị em biết các khoản đóng góp được sử dụng như thế nào để hỗ trợ giáo xứ của chúng ta.

Dear Most Holy Trinity Family,

This weekend we will be remembering our beloved departed sisters and brothers. Some of us will remember our grandparents, spouses, parents, children, siblings, friends, and relatives. We pray for them because this is a sacred duty, and an act of care, and love. Praying for them is a reminder that the power of love, and of the resurrection, is stronger than the force of death. Our belief in the life of the resurrection is an act of faith and of love. The commemoration of the faithful departed reminds us that Christ has turned suffering into glory, and death into life.

Moreover, the commemoration of the faithfully departed reminds us that we are only pilgrims on the earth. This weekend’s celebration should be infused with hope for us because the belief in the resurrection is at the core of Christian faith and doctrine. Saint

Paul, one of the early writers of the New Testament, came to this understanding early on. In his letter to the Thessalonians, he says:

 “If we believe that Jesus died and rose, so too will God, through Jesus, bring with him those who have fallen asleep.”

This deeply and moving statement of faith comes to us prior to the writings of the gospels. The dead shall be raised to dwell in the eternal dwelling place. So, let us not lose hope, but rather join in prayer for our beloved departed brothers and sisters to entrust them to the love and care our merciful God.

Dear Most Holy Trinity Family,

Peace and blessings to you!

In the first reading, Moses is engaged in a battle with Amalek’s army. Moses grew tired and weary, but his friends supported his arms one on each side so that his hands remained steady and the battle could continue.

This weekend, as we celebrate our Ministry Fair, we are reminded that we, too, need one another to remain strong in faith and service. Like Moses, some of our volunteers may be growing weary, and they need your support. Please stop by one of the tables after Mass and consider offering your time and gifts to a ministry. If you don’t see something that matches your talents or interests, please leave us your contact information so that we can connect with you.

Here is an update. In a previous letter, I shared that MHT was preparing to hire a Music Coordinator. After further conversations with our choir directors, we have decided to postpone this process for now. I also mentioned that after our recent Jesuit retreat, we wanted to hear your dreams, hopes, challenges, and opportunities for growth in our parish and school community. This remains a goal, but I’ve been advised to begin this consultation first with our parish leadership team.

Additionally, our Diocese is moving forward with implementing its Pastoral Plan born from the synodal consultation. Each parish will align its own plan with the six diocesan priorities and objectives. Please check the parish bulletin and website to learn more. MHT will select a few priorities to begin implementing this plan. Although it is an eight-year journey, we will begin soon by discerning which areas of growth best serve our community.

Thank you for your ongoing support of our MHT family. Let us continue to pray for one another and for the Holy Spirit’s guidance as we grow together in mission and service.

Dear Most Holy Trinity Family:

In the Gospel for this weekend, one unexpected person returns to Jesus with a grateful heart, while the other nine take their healing for granted. So, in light of this reading, I want to take the opportunity to thank God, and the MHT parish and school community, for the ways that Most Holy Trinity Parish is a beacon of healing and hope in East San Jose.

I am grateful for our catechists, and the children, youth, and adults in preparation to receive the Sacraments. I am grateful for our liturgical ministers, the choirs, the Most Holy Trinity School, St. Vincent de Paul, the MHT staff, our families, youth and children, young adults and the elderly, the Jesuits, our Ignatian Spirituality, and indeed, for all the different volunteers, groups, and ministries.

Sometimes we take our blessings for granted because we feel entitled to them. When this happens, we run the risk of developing spiritual amnesia. However, a spirit of gratitude helps us to grow in holiness. When we give thanks, we remember the blessings and the gifts that we have received. So, I invite you to be like that unexpected person in the Gospel story today, and as a member of the MHT community, pay attention to the people, and to the ministries that you are most grateful for.

The weekend of October 18/19, our parish will hold a ministry fair. Please consider joining one of our parish ministries. There are plenty of opportunities to serve, and I am sure that we have one that will match your gifts and talents. Joining one of the ministries to support the parish community can be a response of gratitude. The MHT community is in need of your talents.

Gia đình Chúa Ba Ngôi Quý Mến,

Tin Mừng cuối tuần này kể về câu chuyện một người không được ngờ tới đã trở lại với Chúa Giêsu để tỏ lòng biết ơn, trong khi chín người còn lại coi việc họ được chữa lành là điều hiển nhiên. Trong ánh sáng của bài Tin Mừng, tôi muốn dâng lời cảm tạ Chúa, và tri ân cộng đồng và trường học của giáo xứ Chúa Ba Ngôi, vì cách mà giáo xứ Chúa Ngôi đã nên như ngọn hải đăng của sự chữa lành và hy vọng tại vùng phía Đông của thành phố San Jose.

Tôi biết ơn các giáo lý viên, các em và quý vị người lớn đang chuẩn bị lãnh nhận các Bí tích. Tôi biết ơn các thừa tác viên phụng vụ, các ca viên, các thày cô và nhân viên trường học Chúa Ba Ngôi, hội Bác ái St. Vincent de Paul, nhân viên của giáo xứ, các gia đình trong giáo xứ, thanh thiếu niên và thiếu nhi, các bạn trẻ và người cao tuổi, các anh em Dòng Tên, trung tâm Linh đạo I-nhã, và toàn thể các tình nguyện viên, các hội nhóm, và các nhóm phụng vụ.

Đôi khi chúng ta xem những ơn phúc mình nhận được là chuyện đương nhiên vì chúng ta cảm thấy mình phải được như vậy. Nhưng khi chúng ta có thái độ ứng xử như vậy với những ơn phúc chúng ta lãnh nhận, chúng ta có nguy cơ quên lãng những kỳ công của Chúa và sống như không có Chúa. Tuy nhiên, tinh thần biết ơn giúp chúng ta trở nên thánh thiện. Khi chúng ta biết tạ ơn, chúng ta nhớ lại những phước lành và món quà mà chúng ta đã nhận được. Vì vậy, tôi mời quý ông bà anh chị em noi theo người có lòng biết ơn trong Tin Mừng cuối tuần này, và vì mình là thành viên của cộng đồng Chúa Ba Ngôi, quý ông bà anh chị em hãy quan tâm đến những con người và những hoạt động mục vụ mà mình biết ơn nhất.

Vào cuối tuần 18/19 tháng 10, giáo xứ chúng ta sẽ tổ chức một hội chợ mục vụ. Xin mời quý ông bà anh chị em đến tham gia hội chợ để xem xét ghi danh vào một trong các hoạt động mục vụ của giáo xứ. Có rất nhiều cơ hội để phục vụ, và tôi chắc chắn rằng giáo xứ có một hoạt động phù hợp với năng khiếu và tài năng của quý ông bà anh chị em. Tham gia vào một trong các hoạt động mục vụ để hỗ trợ cộng đồng giáo xứ là một cách để thể hiện lòng biết ơn. Cộng đồng Chúa Ba Ngôi cần đến tài năng của từng quý ông bà anh chị em.

Dear Most Holy Trinity Family:

October 4^th marks the celebration of St. Francis of Assisi. He is the Saint who has been most closely associated with creation. Thus, Fr. Manh did the traditional blessing of the animals for our MHT students. Furthermore, this year is the 10^th anniversary of Laudato Si. This is Pope Francis’s encyclical on the care for creation. Our common home, the earth, and care for poor, are important points of his papacy. These two points are intertwined and are very much a part of Catholic Social Teaching. So, in honor of St. Francis of Assisi and of Pope Francis, I invite you reflect on all of God’s creation with a sense of gratitude and reverence for this beautiful planet that God has entrusted to our care for the benefit all.

Moreover, when you received the Eucharist this weekend, remember that the bread and wine used in the Consecration are the fruits of the earth and the work of human labor. So, in the context of Laudato Si, and remembering the reading from the book of the Prophet Habakkuk, I invite you to listen to the words of the prophet who says: “How long, O LORD? I cry for help but you do not listen! I cry out to you, “Violence!” but you do not intervene.” As you listen to these words, can you hear in the sphere of God’s creation a message of despair due to violence being inflicted? Where do you do you see suffering in the scope of creation begging for intervention?

Speaking of listening: the four Jesuits serving at MHT recently had a work retreat. It was a time for us to listen to one another, and to get to know each other better. We talked about the richness we encounter in the ministries of MHT. We also shared some of our dreams and hopes for MHT, and the challenges and opportunities that we face. Moreover, we spent a significant amount of time considering the Pastoral Plan of our Diocese. We drew some conclusions, but by the end of third day, it became clear to us that we wanted to hear from you. We want to know your dreams, hopes, challenges, and opportunities you see for growth in our MHT parish and school community. So, in the next couple of months, we will be working on a plan where you will be able to provide us feedback with the hope of creating common visions.

Gia đình Chúa Ba Ngôi Quý Mến,

Ngày thứ Bảy, 4 tháng 10, là lễ kính Thánh Phanxicô Assisi, vị thánh rất thân thiết với những công trình sáng tạo của Chúa. Theo truyền thống của ngày lễ kính Ngài, cha Mạnh đã chúc lành cho các con vật nuôi trong nhà của các em học sinh trường Chúa Ba Ngôi. Năm nay cũng là kỷ niệm 10 năm tông thư Laudato Si của Đức Giáo hoàng Phanxicô, về việc chăm sóc tạo vật của Chúa. Trái đất – ngôi nhà chung của chúng ta, và việc quan tâm đến những người nghèo là những chủ đề quan trọng trong sứ vụ giáo hoàng của Ngài. Hai điểm này gắn kết chặt chẽ với nhau, và là phần quan trọng của Giáo huấn Xã hội Công giáo. Nhân dịp kính nhớ Thánh Phanxicô Assisi và Đức Giáo hoàng Phanxicô, tôi mời quý ông bà anh chị em suy ngẫm về tất cả công trình sáng tạo của Thiên Chúa với lòng biết ơn và kính trọng, đối với hành tinh xinh đẹp mà Thiên Chúa đã giao phó cho chúng ta chăm sóc vì lợi ích chung.

Khi rước lễ, chúng ta cũng nhớ rằng bánh và rượu dùng trong Thánh lễ là hoa trái của đất và thành quả lao động của con người. Với tông thư Laudato Si và bài đọc từ Ngôn sứ Ha ba cúc, tôi mời quý ông bà anh chị em lắng nghe lời của ngôn sứ:

“Chúa ơi, đến bao giờ? Tôi kêu cầu mà Ngài không nghe! Tôi lên tiếng về bạo lực, nhưng Ngài không can thiệp.”

Khi để tai lắng nghe, quý ông bà anh chị em có nghe thấy trong công trình sáng tạo của Thiên Chúa một thông điệp của sự tuyệt vọng vì bạo lực đang xảy ra không? Quý ông bà anh chị em đã nhìn thấy nỗi đau nào trong tạo vật đang kêu gọi sự can thiệp?

Nói về lắng nghe, bốn linh mục Dòng Tên chúng tôi đang phục vụ tại giáo xứ Chúa Ba Ngôi ít ngày trước đã tham gia một kỳ tĩnh tâm. Đó là khoảng thời gian để chúng tôi lắng nghe nhau và hiểu nhau hơn. Chúng tôi đã suy ngẫm về sự phong phú của các công việc mục vụ tại Chúa Ba Ngôi, chia sẻ ước mơ và hy vọng cho giáo xứ và trường học, bàn về những cơ hội và thách thức mà chúng ta đang đối mặt. Chúng tôi cũng dành rất nhiều thời gian để xem xét Kế hoạch Mục vụ của Giáo phận. Mặc dù chúng tôi đã đưa ra một số quyết định, nhưng vào ngày cuối của kỳ tĩnh tâm, chúng tôi nhận ra rằng chúng tôi muốn nghe ý kiến từ quý ông bà anh chị em. Chúng tôi muốn biết những ước mơ, hy vọng, thách thức và ý tưởng phát triển của quý ông bà anh chị em cho cộng đồng giáo xứ và trường học Chúa Ba Ngôi. Trong vài tháng tới, chúng tôi sẽ lên kế hoạch về cách thu nhận ký kiến từ quý ông bà anh chị em, để giúp chúng ta phát triển một tầm nhìn chung cho giáo xứ và trường học.

Dear Most Holy Trinity Family,

First of all, I am deeply grateful for such a wonderful celebration on Sunday, September 14. Even though it was my installation ceremony, the celebration was about the MHT community coming together to pray, to celebrate our history, and to ask for God’s blessing for the future. I am filled with profound appreciation for all of you, and in a particular manner, for those who worked hard to make such a beautiful multicultural and family celebration possible. The event created an opportunity for a wonderful communal encounter.

Walking together with a shared vision is the way to continue to move forward. In an interview with CRUX Social Media, Pope Leo XIV said that in a polarized society, synodality is the way to address some of the great challenges that we face.

If you have been following the Sunday readings, you might have noticed that the first reading has been taken from the book of the Prophet Amos. In these readings, Amos is focusing on the mistreatment and abuse of the economically poor. He does this with an extra emphasis on the dishonesty of those who commercialize the harvest of the peasant farmers. The business dealers use the harvest of the poor to enrich themselves. This abuse is still a common practice in societies, and it is contrary to Church teaching. According to Scripture, created goods, those manufactured and created by using the goods of the earth, are for all to benefit from, not only a selected few, but for all, and especially the poor. The created goods of the earth are intended for the use of all peoples. However, often the tendency is to keep them for a selected group of people while depriving others from them. We see this disparity both in our own nation, and in between nations. So, let us not forget that God is the Creator, and we are only the stewards of creation. Moreover, let us refrain from exploiting the goods of the earth for the benefit of only a selected few.

Jesus, as well as the Prophet Amos, is appealing to our conscience so that we do not use the goods of earth in a manner that exploits the resources of the earth for selfish profit and which disadvantages the poor. He is calling on us to use material and non-material resources, such as time and talent, wisely and generously for the “Greater Glory of God.” This means investing resources in people, especially those most in need, to build communities of friendship, peace, and care for all of humanity, and for our common home, the earth.

Lời đầu tiên tôi xin gởi đến quý ông bà anh chị em là lòng biết ơn chân thành về buổi lễ tuyệt vời vào Chúa Nhật, ngày 14 tháng 9.

Mặc dù đó là lễ nhậm chức của tôi, nhưng buổi lễ là dịp để cộng đồng Chúa Ba Ngôi cùng nhau cầu nguyện, cùng nhau kỷ niệm lịch sử của chúng ta, và xin ơn Chúa cho tương lai. Lòng tôi tràn đầy niềm tri ân sâu sắc đến tất cả quý ông bà anh chị em, đặc biệt là những người đã làm việc vất vả để buổi lễ đa văn hóa của gia đình Chúa Ba ngôi diễn ra thật tốt đẹp, và tạo cơ hội cho một cuộc gặp gỡ cộng đồng thật tuyệt vời.

Cùng nhau tiến bước với cùng một tầm nhìn là cách để tiếp tục tiến lên. Trong một cuộc phỏng vấn với CRUX Social Media, Đức Giáo hoàng Leo XIV nói rằng trong một xã hội đầy chia rẽ, tính hiệp hành (synodality) là cách để giải quyết một số thách thức lớn mà chúng ta đang đối mặt.

Theo dõi các bài đọc Chúa Nhật, chúng ta thấy bài đọc thứ nhất lấy từ Sách Tiên tri Amos. Trong bài đọc này, tiên tri Amos tập trung vào việc người nghèo bị đối xử tệ và bị lạm dụng về mặt kinh tế. Ngài đặc biệt nhấn mạnh vào sự không trung thực của những người thương mại hóa vụ mùa của các nông dân. Những thương gia này lợi dụng vụ mùa của người nghèo để làm giàu cho bản thân. Sự lạm dụng này vẫn còn phổ biến trong các xã hội, và điều này trái với giáo huấn của Giáo hội.

Theo Kinh Thánh, những của cải vật chất được tạo ra từ các tài nguyên trên quả đất là để mọi người cùng hưởng, không phải chỉ dành riêng cho một nhóm người nào, mà là cho tất cả, đặc biệt là người nghèo. Những sản vật này được dành cho tất cả mọi người. Tuy nhiên, thường có xu hướng là những sản vật này được giữ lại cho một nhóm nhỏ trong khi những người khác không được hưởng gì cả. Chúng ta thấy sự chênh lệch này cả trong quốc gia của chúng ta và giữa các quốc gia. Vì vậy, chúng ta đừng quên rằng Chúa là Đấng Tạo Hóa, và chúng ta chỉ là những người quản lý công trình sáng tạo của Chúa. Hơn nữa, chúng ta nên tránh khai thác các nguồn tài nguyên chỉ để phục vụ cho một số ít người.

Chúa Giêsu, cũng như tiên tri Amos, đánh động lương tâm chúng ta, để chúng ta không sử dụng của cải vật chất như một kiểu khai thác tài nguyên vì lợi ích cá nhân và làm tổn hại người nghèo. Chúa Giêsu kêu gọi chúng ta sử dụng các tài nguyên vật chất và phi vật chất, như thời gian và tài năng, một cách khôn ngoan và rộng lượng để làm “Vinh danh Chúa hơn”. Điều này có nghĩa là đầu tư nguồn tài nguyên vào con người, đặc biệt là những người cần được giúp đỡ nhất, để chúng ta xây dựng những cộng đồng thân thiện, hòa bình, và biết quan tâm đến toàn nhân loại và trái đất, ngôi nhà chung của chúng ta.

 Dear Most Holy Trinity Family,

In the last couple of weeks, I have seen new signs of hope and joy in our parish community.

For example, I witnessed the Faith Formation teams holding their orientation meetings to kick off the new cycle. I was inspired by the diversity of the teams all around. Moreover, the Young Adult group had a spiritual gathering that was life giving, and the Most Holy Trinity School children have started their weekly school Mass. In all of these activities, I see a future full of hope and joy. I also see the hope, joy, and dreams God has for our Church and society, and I am deeply grateful for that.

In addition, I would like to share with you a list of small items that might change the pattern of the celebration of the Mass that we have been accustomed to:

All hand sanitizers on the ledge of the windows in the church will be removed. If you need to sanitize your hands, please carry one with you.

The Prayer of Generosity that is recited as part of the General Intercessions will no longer be included, although meaningful, this prayer is not an official part of the celebration of the Mass. It remains a beautiful prayer that can still be recited in other gatherings.

All Mass intentions will now be mentioned at the start of each Mass. Therefore, if you would like to request a Mass intention, please submit it at least 15 minutes before the start of each Mass.

The mission statement proclaimed before the start of Mass will no longer be included. Although it is important, mission statements usually appear on social media pages rather than proclaimed before the liturgy.

The school Mass for the MHT students during the week will now be closed to the public. It is now reserved only for the Most Holy Trinity School students.

You will also notice some other differences related to the flow of the liturgical ministers, but most of these will not affect you directly. For example, you might notice that the Eucharistic Ministers will move to the Sanctuary during the sign of peace in order to receive Holy Communion.

This month, we had two Marian celebrations: The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Our Lady of Sorrows. Our Lady of Sorrows is close to my heart because it reminds me of the sorrow that many mothers endure when they are faced with the suffering of their sons and daughters. Many mothers carry the suffering of their children when their children are suffering from an illness, an addiction, imprisonment, or other calamities, including perhaps the tragic death of one of their children. Therefore, through the intercession of Our Sorrowful Mother, let us lift up our sorrowful mothers in our prayers.

Dear Most Holy Trinity Family:

In the book of Numbers, the Israelites find themselves in the desert grumbling because they are dissatisfied with the food. As a result, they crave the rich food they enjoyed in Egypt when they were enslaved. In times of change and transition, the temptation is to look to the past with nostalgia, craving a time when we were more satisfied. This is a normal human emotion. However, God is always leading us forward into the future—not backward. This requires letting go of attachments to places, people, customs, traditions, and anything else that prevents us from moving forward together into the future God has in store for us. We see this kind of self-emptying—detachment—in the life of Jesus as he fulfills the will of God.

This weekend, Bishop Oscar Cantú will install me as pastor of Most Holy Trinity. In all honesty, this will not be my favorite day because I am a socially introverted person. However, it will be a day to humble myself, as it will serve as a reminder of my role as a servant leader. This also requires self-emptying on my part so that I can be led by the Holy Spirit, who also manifests himself through my Jesuit brothers, the parish and school staff, the pastoral council and finance council, and the rest of the leadership and parishioners of MHT. It will be a day when we will make the commitment to walk together in a spirit of synodality as one multilingual and multicultural parish community.

Finally, both in the first reading and in the Gospel for today, we find traces of sinful human behavior, and of God’s saving grace. We can see that when we go low in our conduct, God                                                                                                     stoops down to raise us up. The Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross gives us a message of faith and hope, showing that God can bring forth triumph and glory even from the most painful and desolate moments of our human existence.

Trong sách Dân Số, dân Ítraen ở trong sa mạc đã kêu trách vì không hài lòng với lương thực. Họ ao ước những món ăn ngon mà họ từng có tại Ai Cập, nơi họ đã bị làm nô lệ. Trong những thời điểm đổi thay và chuyển tiếp, chúng ta thường dễ bị cám dỗ mà nhìn lại quá khứ với sự hoài niệm, mong nhớ những ngày tháng mà mình cảm thấy thoả mãn hơn. Đây là cảm xúc tự nhiên của con người. Tuy nhiên, Thiên Chúa luôn dẫn dắt chúng ta bước về phía trước trong tương lai, chứ không quay trở lại quá khứ. Điều này đòi hỏi chúng ta biết từ bỏ những ràng buộc với nơi chốn, con người, tập tục, truyền thống, hay bất cứ điều gì cản trở cộng đoàn chúng ta cùng nhau tiến bước vào tương lai mà Thiên Chúa đã chuẩn bị. Chúng ta thấy mẫu gương của sự tự hủy, sự từ bỏ này nơi cuộc đời của Đức Giêsu, khi Ngài hoàn tất thánh ý của Thiên Chúa.

Cuối tuần này, Đức Cha Oscar Cantú sẽ cử hành nghi thức bổ nhiệm tôi làm cha chánh xứ Giáo Xứ Chúa Ba Ngôi. Thành thật mà nói, đây sẽ không phải là ngày yêu thích của tôi, vì tôi vốn là người hướng nội. Tuy nhiên, đây sẽ là một ngày tôi cố gắng khiêm tốn, vì nó nhắc nhở tôi về vai trò lãnh đạo phục vụ. Điều này cũng đòi hỏi tôi biết từ bỏ chính mình để được Chúa Thánh Thần hướng dẫn, Đấng cũng hiện diện nơi các anh em Dòng Tên, quý nhân viên giáo xứ và trường học, hội đồng mục vụ và tài chánh, cũng như tất cả ban ngành và giáo dân trong giáo xứ Chúa Ba Ngôi. Chúng ta nhận ra rằng khi chúng ta sa ngã trong hành vi, Thiên Chúa lại cúi xuống để nâng chúng ta lên. Lễ Suy Tôn Thánh Giá mang đến cho chúng ta sứ điệp của đức tin và hy vọng, nhắc rằng ngay cả trong những đau khổ và tuyệt vọng nhất của kiếp người, Thiên Chúa vẫn có thể biến đổi để đem lại chiến thắng và vinh quang.
