Pastor’s Weekly Reflection

Dear Most Holy Trinity Family:
This weekend we are confronted with the story of a man blind from birth. The underlying cause of blindness, according to questions raised by Jesus’ disciples, is associated with sin, but Jesus dismisses and transcends this argument. Rather, he uses the opportunity to heal the man. After he heals him, Jesus is confronted and discredited by some religious leaders. Today’s Gospel narrative is full of dreams and trauma because we can read the rejection, abuse, and violence that the man born blind endured. His parents were also harshly questioned by the religious authorities. They too were bullied.
Jesus does not behave like the disciples and religious leaders. He does not shame or reject the blind man. Quite the opposite, when he sees him, he acknowledges and embraces him. Not only that, Jesus also confronts the ignorance and misconception that the disciples and religious leaders held towards the man and his parents. Misconceptions and ignorance of people with disabilities, and towards people who appear to be different from us, can also lead us to rejection, abuse, and violence. One has to be closemind...
