Dear Most Holy Trinity Family:
In the context of today’s Gospel passage, the number “seven” seems like the ultimate number. This is why Peter first asked Jesus if he should forgive someone up to seven times. For some of us, just three could be an ultimate number. For example, when my mother gave me an order to do a task, most of the time I did not get it done immediately. Sometimes I waited until she counted to three. She would ask me to do it twice, but not a third time, because if she counted to three, and I had not done it, I was in trouble with her. For my mother, the third call was the ultimate, and for Peter, the limit was perhaps the seventh time. However, when it comes to forgiveness, Jesus says to Peter: “Seventy times seven.” Basically, Jesus is telling Peter not to keep a record.
In the parable, there is a debtor whose debt is forgiven because there is no way that person could have paid it off. Later on, after the debtor is set free of his debt, he finds a person who owes him a small amount, and who also cannot pay it off immediately. But, the one who had been freed of the debt, put the one who now owes him a small amount in prison! For me, this is the disturbing part of the parable.
Once the unforgiving and ungrateful servant got what he wanted, he disregarded the needs of the one who was indebted him. Sometimes our behavior can be similar to the unforgiving servant: when we get what we need or want, we can quickly forget the blessings we have received. However, this is not always the case because many of us do our best to live out the values of the Gospel with generosity, compassion, forgiveness, and stewardship. And we do it out of sense of gratitude for all the blessings that we have received. In the Sowing Seeds of Faith campaign, I have come to see this and more in all of you. Thus, I continue to pray that we may respond to the needs of others with generous and grateful hearts.

Trong bối cảnh bài Tin Mừng hôm nay, con số “bảy” dường như là con số tối đa. Đó là lý do tại sao Phêrô hỏi Chúa Giêsu liệu ông có nên tha thứ cho ai đó đến bảy lần hay không. Đối với một số người trong chúng ta, con số ba cũng có thể được coi là giới hạn cuối cùng. Chẳng hạn, khi mẹ tôi bảo tôi làm một việc gì đó, phần lớn thời gian tôi không thực hiện ngay lập tức. Đôi khi tôi đợi cho đến khi bà đếm đến ba. Bà thường nhắc tôi làm việc đó hai lần, nhưng không đến lần thứ ba; bởi vì nếu bà đếm đến ba mà tôi vẫn chưa làm, thì tôi sẽ gặp rắc rối với bà. Đối với mẹ tôi, lần gọi thứ ba là giới hạn cuối cùng, còn đối với Phêrô, giới hạn đó có lẽ là lần thứ bảy. Tuy nhiên, khi nói đến sự tha thứ, Chúa Giêsu bảo Phêrô: “Bảy mươi lần bảy”. Về cơ bản, Chúa Giêsu muốn nhắn nhủ Phêrô đừng bận tâm đến việc ghi lại số lần tha thứ.
Trong dụ ngôn, có một người mắc nợ được tha nợ vì người đó không có cách nào để trả hết số nợ ấy. Sau đó, khi đã được xóa nợ, người này lại gặp một người đang nợ mình một khoản tiền nhỏ, và người kia cũng không thể trả ngay lập tức. Thế nhưng, chính người vừa được xóa nợ lại tống giam người đang nợ mình khoản tiền nhỏ kia vào tù! Đối với tôi, đây là phần gây trăn trở nhất của dụ ngôn.
Một khi người đầy tớ thiếu lòng tha thứ và vô ơn kia đạt được điều mình muốn, anh ta liền phớt lờ nhu cầu của người đang mắc nợ mình. Đôi khi cách hành xử của chúng ta cũng giống như người đầy tớ thiếu lòng tha thứ ấy: khi có được điều mình cần hoặc muốn, chúng ta có thể nhanh chóng quên đi những ân phúc mình đã lãnh nhận. Tuy nhiên, không phải lúc nào cũng như vậy, bởi có nhiều người trong chúng ta vẫn luôn nỗ lực sống theo các giá trị Tin Mừng với tinh thần quảng đại, lòng trắc ẩn, sự tha thứ và tinh thần quản lý trung tín. Và chúng ta thực hiện điều đó xuất phát từ lòng biết ơn đối với tất cả những ân phước đã lãnh nhận. Qua chiến dịch “Hạt Giống Đức Tin” (Sowing Seeds of Faith), tôi đã thấy được những điều này và nhiều hơn thế nữa nơi tất cả anh chị em. Vì vậy, tôi vẫn tiếp tục cầu nguyện để chúng ta có thể đáp lại những nhu cầu của người khác với trái tim quảng đại và đầy lòng biết ơn.

En el contexto del pasaje del evangelio de hoy, «siete» representaba un número definitivo o límite. Por eso, Pedro le preguntó a Jesús si debía perdonar hasta siete veces. Para algunos de nosotros, el número definitivo sería el tres. Por ejemplo, recuerdo cuando mi madre me ordenaba hacer una tarea. La mayoría de veces, no la realizaba de inmediato. A veces esperaba a que me lo mandara por tercera vez. Me lo podía pedir dos veces, pero no una tercera, porque si llegaba a contar hasta tres y aún no lo había hecho, me metía en problemas con ella. Para mi madre, el tercer aviso era el límite definitivo; para Pedro, el límite era el séptimo. Sin embargo, cuando se trata del perdón, Jesús le dice a Pedro: «Setenta veces siete». En el fondo, Jesús le está diciendo a Pedro que no lleve la cuenta.
En la parábola de hoy, hay un deudor a quien se le perdona la deuda porque no había manera de que pudiera pagarla. Más tarde, una vez liberado de su propia deuda, esta persona encuentra a un hombre que le debía una pequeña cantidad pero que no podía pagársela de inmediato. Entonces, ¡aquel que fue liberado de la deuda encarcela a quien ahora le debe una pequeña suma! Para mí, es la parte inquietante de la parábola.
Una vez que el siervo despiadado obtuvo el perdón de la deuda, pasó por alto las necesidades de aquel que le debía. A veces, nuestra conducta puede asemejarse a la de aquel siervo despiadado porque cuando conseguimos lo que queremos, podemos olvidar rápidamente las bendiciones recibidas. Sin embargo, no siempre es así, ya que muchos de nosotros nos esforzamos por vivir los valores del Evangelio, tales como la generosidad, la compasión, el perdón y la corresponsabilidad. Y lo hacemos movidos por el agradecimiento ante las bendiciones que hemos recibido. Por ejemplo, a través de la campaña Sembrando Semillas de Fe, he podido apreciar esto y mucho más de ustedes. Por ello, ruego que podamos responder a las necesidades de los demás con corazones generosos y agradecidos.
