Sacrament of the Anointing of Sick and Funerals
“Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up.” (James 5:14-16)
The Lord Jesus, who went about doing good works and healing sickness and infirmity of every kind, commanded his disciples to care for the sick, to pray for them, and to lay hands on them.
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is offered to anyone who is going through a serious health issue. One does not need to be in immediate danger of death to request this sacrament.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that when the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God’s will, the person be physically healed of illness. But even if there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit’s gift of peace and courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age.
If you or someone you know needs this sacrament, please contact the Parish Office at (408) 729-0101 or speak any of our Parish Priests
Celebration of Funerals
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.” –John 3:16
It is common to celebrate a funeral through a Mass. A farewell of the deceased is the final “commendation to God” by the Church and is the opportunity for the Christian community to greet one of its members before the earthly body is laid to rest and, at the same time, support the grieving family.
The first step is to contact a funeral home, not the church. They will coordinate all funeral arrangements including the times and dates of the vigil, funeral Mass and burial with us.
Please have the funeral home of your choice contact the Parish Office at (408) 729-0101, Ext 100 or 110 to make further arrangements.
